Thus writing a good cover letter stating the reason why you desire to work for the company holds a great degree of importance. You have to avoid certain mistakes while creating your cover letter to make a strong impact on the potential employer. A cover letter containing numerous mistakes will discourage the employer to even give a cursory glance to your resume.
• First and foremost, you should never send your resume without a cover letter. Ensure that the cover letter is typed on a superior quality paper. You should avoid handwritten cover letters.
• Do not fail to address your cover letter to the specific person. It is crucial to get information about who is involved in hiring to help you in addressing your letter to that particular person. If there are several people involved in the hiring process, or you have not got any idea of any specific person who will review your resume, you can address the letter to the company’s HR manager, or even the job title/position of the persons participating in the hiring process.
• Do not make a sexist salutation like “Gentlemen” when responding to blind ads.
• Do not write a typically boring introduction in the first paragraph. You should try and grab the attention of the employers in the beginning itself. Also state the reasons to the employer why you think yourself fit to work for the position. Your cover letter needs to be well written with demonstration of good presentation skills.
• Most people do not create separate cover letters for different jobs they apply. This is a major mistake. Since career goals of each job is different, you should ideally customize your cover letter according to the requirements of that particular job, rather than sending identical generalized letter to each organization.
• Avoid using clichés like “please find the resume enclosed”. Employers very well can see your resume being enclosed. Do not use wordy phrases too as these are time wasters and also eat up a lot of space.
• Be precise and do not ramble in the cover letter. A cover letter should not contain the story of your life; rather get straight to the main point.
• Grammatical mistakes as well as typos are huge turn offs to employers. These show that you have not paid adequate attention to details. Avoid these slips at any cost.
• You should sign the cover letter personally.
• After your resume and cover letter are ready, do not make the mistake of stuffing them into any small envelope. These important documents should be enclosed in a bigger envelope to avoid them being folded.
• Cover letters sent through e-mails need to be shorter and concise.
